The Buckeye Art Therapy Association (BATA), is a non-profit professional association in Ohio for art therapists, students, and individuals who support the therapeutic use of art and the advancement of the art therapy field.

BATA is one of the oldest, largest and most active state art therapy associations in the country, and is an affiliate chapter of The American Art Therapy Association (AATA).

We welcome and invite you to explore this site to learn more about art therapy, art therapy in Ohio, the work of BATA, and its members.

WHAT IS ART THERAPY?
The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) defines art therapy as "an established mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight". 

Art therapists are masters level professionals who hold a degree in art therapy or a related field. Educational requirements include: theories of art therapy, counseling, and psychotherapy; ethics and standards of practice; assessment and evaluation; individual, group, and family techniques; human and creative development; multicultural issues; research methods; and practicum experiences in clinical, community, and/or other settings. Art therapists are skilled in the application of a variety of art modalities (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media) for assessment and treatment.  Read more about What Art Therapy is and download a free BATA brochure, click here.
About Art Therapy Credentialing
Most Professional Members of BATA are credentialed art therapists. Below is a description of the professional credentialing of art therapists:

Registration - The designation "ATR"(Art Therapist Registered) is granted by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) to art therapists who have successfully completed the required graduate educational training and post graduate professional experience, which includes supervision by an ATR credentialed art therapist.

Board Certification - The designation "BC" (Board Certified) is granted by the ATCB to ATR art therapists who have successfully passed the independently administered, national certification examination. Re-certification is provided every five years by documentation of continuing education, publication, presentation, exhibition, and other activities which demonstrate continuing professional competence.

It is important to know it is unethical for someone to practice art therapy or refer to themselves as an art therapist without obtaining a Master's Degree in Art Therapy.


 

 

Senate Bill 205

ALERT:  Please contact your Ohio Congressional Senator today and ask for support for Senate Bill 205!

Update April 25, 2012
 SB 205 has had Sponsor Hearings, Proponent Hearings, and Opponent Hearings.  BATA has submitted a rebuttal and we are now awaiting a final committee hearing on the bill.  Opponent/Proponent.  Please continue to contact your Ohio Senator to support SB 205.  Look in your membership profile for information on your Ohio representatives.

BATA is backing SB 205.  The Art Therapy License Legislation is Sponsored by Senators Michael Skindell (D- Cleveland) and Tim Grendell (R- Chesterland) Co-Sponsored by Senator Nina Turner (D - Cleveland).

The purpose of SB 205 is to:

  • Create a clear definition for credentialed and licensed professional art therapists in the state Ohio that includes the nationally recognized standards for graduate education, competencies, hours of supervised practice, and credentialing.

  • Protect the public and improve mental health outcomes by prohibiting unqualified practitioners from advertising themselves or otherwise holding themselves out to be art therapists or practicing art therapy.

Scope of practice:

                A person licensed under this bill as an art therapist may practice art therapy through the integrated use of psychotherapeutic principles and visual art media in the assessment, evaluation, treatment, amelioration, and the remediation of emotional, cognitive, neurological, psychosocial, physical, and developmental discords.  A licensed art therapist may provide training and supervision to art therapy students or prospective applicants for licensure.
